I've only bought used, three times from private seller, once from dealer

Bought a one year old Passat wagon, drove it for 17 years. My last five speed :(

Bought a couple of my mother's mini vans, drove them into the ground, donated them or sold them.

Bought a seven year old Volvo wagon just shy of 80K miles from a local dealer. Still driving with 110K miles. Aside from normal maintenance, we've spent $1,500 on two odd problems. Mr Thankful negotiated the price to blue book value sale with a private seller.

Bought a five year old Honda CRV w 20K miles from a 95 yo. We paid over blue book due to the low miles, excessive care. I do not love this vehicle. The Volvo has so much power and this thing is like driving a tin can. But it's a cheap commuter car and I have a new driver on the horizon.

Bottom line - I like to pay cash for a reliable vehicle. No car payment. I have my trusty mechanic look it over and go from there. We've been fortunate.
